Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has praised the judiciary for truly coming through as the last hope of the common man, stating that in 2023, amidst a thick plot to impeach him, both God and the rule of law saved him.

Aiyedatiwa made this statement on Wednesday in Abuja during the Body of Benchers’ maiden Annual Lecture and the public presentation of the report on the directions of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.

The report was, titled: “Half-A-Century of the Body of Benchers: The Past, The Present, and The Future of Maintaining the Ethics of the Legal Profession in Nigeria.”

In 2023, the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly brought allegations of gross misconduct against Aiyedatiwa, who was serving as acting governor at the time while the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu went abroad for medical treatment.

The Assembly requested the state’s Chief Judge to constitute a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct levelled against Aiyedatiwa, as per Section 188 (5) of the Nigerian Constitution.

However, the Chief Judge responded that no proceedings would be entertained by any court until an ex parte order issued on September 26, 2023, by an Abuja court was either vacated or set aside.

On October 16, 2023, the spokesperson for the Assembly, Olatunji Oshati, announced the suspension of impeachment proceedings against Aiyedatiwa until the court order was vacated.

Aiyedatiwa later took office as governor following Akeredolu’s death in December 2023.
