Edo Assembly calls for urgent help for victims of rainstorm disaster

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA; State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and other relevant authorities to, as a matter of urgency, assist victims of recent rainstorm disaster in the state.

Moving a motion under matters of urgent public importance, the member representing Akoko Edo 1, Prince Yekini Idaiye, informed the house of the devastating effect of the rainstorm that caused havoc in some communities in his local government area on March 3, that left in its wake destruction of houses.

He stated that the rain on the said date affected over 100 houses blowing off roofs of the affected buildings, making some of them to collapse in Ojirami, Oja, Dagbala, Ososo, Akuku and Ate communities, all in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state.

Prince Idaiye appealed to his colleagues to support him in calling on relevant bodies and good spirited individuals to immediately provide palliatives to the affected communities.

He listed the affected communities to include Ojirami, Dagbala and Ojah, all in ward 5 in the local government.

The lawmaker said: “Ojirami, Dagbala and Ojah people are mainly farmers who normally contribute to the economic development of Edo State and Nigeria at large with cocoa, cashew, garri, maize and palm oil they produce.

“The rainstorms left in its wake the destruction of over 100 houses. Many of the victims had their roofs blown off in Ojirami,Oja, Dagbala, all in Akoko Edo Local Government area of the state.

“The people are traumatized by the destruction of their homes with many roofs blown off, making the children, aged and the women vulnerable to varying pandemic.

“Hundreds of persons were affected and various degrees of injuries, depression and anxieties recorded,as they have been exposed to harsh conditions.

“The children who ought to be in school have lost their books to the rainstorm disaster and are looking for shelter to lay their heads,” he said

Also contributing, the majority leader and member representing Ovia North East one, Mr Charity Aiguobarueghian and member representing Owan East who doubles as the minority leader, Mr Eric Okaka said that the rainstorm also wrecked havocs in some communities in their constituencies.
