The Provost of Elife Academy, Dr. Bola Adewara, has called on churches to engage in farming to help feed their members and contribute to the nation’s food security.

Speaking at a recent media chat, Adewara emphasized that in light of the current economic hardship, food production should not be limited to large-scale farmers alone. He noted that with innovation and determination, individuals can cultivate essential crops such as yam, cocoyam, and potatoes using simple techniques, including container gardening and soil-filled bags.

He urged Nigerians to take advantage of the rainy season by planting food crops to ensure household food security in the coming months. “A wise man will seize this opportunity to create a stable kitchen for his family. If we work to conquer hunger, we conquer shame and worry,” he said.

Adewara, who also publishes Elife Magazine and hosts the Mentoring Masterclass talk show, encouraged citizens to embrace backyard farming and urban cultivation methods to reduce reliance on expensive market supplies while enjoying fresh, homegrown produce.

According to him, churches already invest in real estate, education, and healthcare, so venturing into agriculture should not be overlooked. “It is exciting that some large churches have acquired several hectares of farmland in different parts of Nigeria. Smaller churches should follow suit. At harvest time, they will have enough to support widows, orphans, and visitors,” he stated.

He also pointed out that church-led farming initiatives could create employment opportunities for youths. “Evangelism is best done when the stomach is filled. Jesus first fed the people before preaching. Empty stomachs can’t hear the word of God,” he added.

Dr. Adewara urged Nigerians to act swiftly, warning against ignoring the opportunities presented by the planting season. He stressed that self-sufficiency in food production would ease the burden of rising food costs and strengthen resilience during economic challenges.

“This is not just a call to action but a call to wisdom. The rain is here—plant something today and reap the benefits in the months ahead,” he concluded.
