In an effort to educate children of stroke and emergency response, lawyer, author, entrepreneur and stroke survivor, Emonena Abenabe Akwara, has launched her latest book, Hey! I Spotted a Stroke.

The book launch, held in Lagos, was chaired by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Sam Egube. The book aims to equip young readers with the knowledge to recognise stroke symptoms and respond effectively, a mission born out of Akwara’s own survival story and determination to make a difference.

Akwara, who survived a stroke, said the book was born out of her determination to empower children with the knowledge to recognise and respond to stroke symptoms in their loved ones.

Hey! I Spotted a Stroke follows the stories of young characters — Tutu, Khadi, and Kinsa — as they navigate the challenges of stroke in their families.

The children who learn to identify the warning signs of a stroke and take action to help their loved ones. The book blends engaging storytelling with interactive activities and colorful illustrations, fostering awareness, empathy, and critical thinking among children as well as serves as both an educational tool and a call to action.

Akwara highlighted the urgent need for such resources, particularly for children in underserved communities, where access to medical knowledge is limited.

“Children often witness a stroke happening to their parents, grandparents and other relatives, but they don’t often know what to do. They panic, cry, and freeze. This book teaches them to recognise the signs and take swift action,” she said.

Beyond the book launch, Akwara announced her goal of distributing 5,000 copies to children in underserved communities, beginning with a book reading and distribution session in Makoko, a Lagos waterfront slum in Lagos.

“This is not just about distributing books; it’s about empowering children with knowledge that could save lives.”

There’s even a song in the book to help kids remember what to do. Just like we never forget Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, I want children to never forget how to spot a stroke,” she added.

Her previous books, My Only Friend and I Almost Died, chronicled her near-death experience and stroke recovery journey, inspiring many with her testimony of resilience and faith.

The Chairman of the event, who was represented by his wife, Mrs Bukky Egube, praised Akwara for her resilience and commitment to stroke awareness, emphasising that her journey from survivor to advocate serves as an inspiration to many.
