The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and Fulham have condemned the racist abuse against Calvin Bassey during Sunday’s FA Cup game against Manchester United.

Bassey scored as Fulham played out a 1-1 draw with Man United in both regulation and extra time before going on to win 4-3 on penalties in the FA Cup fourth-round match at Old Trafford.

The outstanding performance of the Nigerian defender was, however, marred by racist comments from some supporters on his social media account.

This has now sparked a strong reaction from the NFF via a post on its official X account and from Fulham through a club statement on their website.

“The NFF stands firmly against all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports Calvin Bassey in the face of these unacceptable actions,” the post read.

“We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all players, both on and off the field. Calvin has our unwavering support, and together, we will continue to fight against racism in football and society.”

Fulham Football Club, on the other hand, said it is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Bassey on social media after the FA Cup win against Man United.

“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour, which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing,” the club wrote.

“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.”

Fulham added that it is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.
