National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, speaks to CHIBUIKE CHUKWU on the party’s recent National Convention where he was unanimously elected. He also speaks on how Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Kwankwasiya movement allegedly attempted to destroy the party and NNPP’s plan for 2027, among other issues. Excerpts

Congratulations once again on your election as NNPP National President. How would you respond to the allegations by the Kwankwaso group that the convention that brought you was illegal?

Well, I hardly respond to issues like that because I know it’s not within their powers to declare any convention properly convened by NNPP as legal or illegal. The law is there on the procedures for holding convention and those procedures were outrightly and adequately followed. Among the procedures are that you mobilise from the wards through the government, yes, and then you came up with a notice of convention, among others and all were duly followed. So it’s not within them to say legal or illegal. I think they are just feeling bad that they lost it. They came into the party, created so many problems, and the MoU that brought them was terminated, and they were asked to go. So they are feeling thoroughly bad. That’s the only reason why they are making such statements. Nigerians will have to disregard such statements. The party has held its convention and the leaders have emerged. Remember that it wasn’t just the convention. It started from the wards, you know, in line with the judgment of the Abuja High Court, which said that the Board of Trustees of the party should activate all the organs of the party; that is the judgment of 1st of November. So the process, which started from the wards on the 13th of January, was only concluded on the 4th of February with that national convention, which they are struggling so hard to try to mess up. But like I said, it’s not within their powers to declare any convention legal or illegal.
