Lafarge Africa Plc has trained geoscientists and mining engineers in Ogun State as part of its efforts to improve operational excellence and capacity development in Nigeria’s mining sector.

The company said in a statement that it held a three-day capacity-building programme at its Training Centre in Ewekoro, Ogun State, in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, providing 25 participants with hands-on learning, technical exposure, and industry best practices.

Speaking at the event, the plant manager, Engr. Philip Anaobi emphasised the company’s commitment to operational excellence and workforce development. “We remain dedicated to equipping industry professionals with the necessary skills to drive sustainable growth in Nigeria’s mining sector,” Anaobi said.

Participants engaged in expert-led sessions on mining best practices, safety protocols, raw materials management, community engagement, and sustainability.

They also toured the Lafarge Ewekoro Quarry to gain firsthand experience in mining operations and environmental conservation.

A guest trainer from the Department of Geology, Kwara State University, Malete, Prof. Jimoh Ajadi, highlighted global best practices in mining.

“Continuous learning and adaptation are crucial in the evolving landscape of mining,” Ajadi remarked, stressing the importance of safety regulations, environmental sustainability, and technological advancements.

The Head of Sustainability and Sponsorships, Gabriel Pollyn, outlined Lafarge’s commitment to sustainability, including climate and energy initiatives, circular economy practices, and eco-friendly cement solutions, noting, “We are pioneering efforts in waste recycling and reducing carbon footprints to promote sustainable resource extraction.”

Meanwhile, the Community Relations Manager, Engr. Oluyomi Owolabi, explained the company’s community relations committee model, which fosters partnerships with 14 host communities, stating, “Our investment in education, healthcare, and infrastructure has strengthened long-term relationships with local stakeholders.”

One of the participants, Emmanuel Okechukwu, expressed appreciation to Lafarge and the Ogun State government, saying, “The training was filled with hands-on learning, and the insights gained will enhance industry operations and sustainability practices.”
