Nnaji decries fight over PDP’s secretary position

Former National Auditor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ray Nnaji, has described as “shameful” the fight that broke out during the Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting between the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and former Youth Leader, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, over the rightful occupant of secretaryship position.

Anyanwu and Udeh-Okoye have been at daggers-drawn over the party’s secretaryship for some time. Udeh-Okoye was nominated by South East stakeholders of the party to replace Anyanwu when he went to contest the governorship of Imo State in 2023. The latter, however, returned after the botched exercise to reclaim the position; a development that sparked off actions in courts.

While a Court of Appeal, Enugu, recently declared Udeh-Okoye the rightful person to occupy the seat, Anyanwu also got a stay of execution of the order from a Court of Appeal, Abuja and further appealed the decision at the Supreme Court.

Reacting to the report that both men went physical at the BoT meeting, Nnaji stated that the fight was an embarrassment. He advised that since the matter was before the court, both men ought to wait for the final outcome before engaging with each other.

“They should subject themselves to the dictates of the Supreme Court. Anyanwu has claimed that he has obtained a stay of execution and at the same time appealed to the Supreme Court. If it is true, then the law should take its course, unless there is no appeal before the Supreme Court on the matter,” he said.

Stressing that fighting was not the best approach to it, Nnaji stated that they should be made to face sanctions from the party. He added: “The PDP should involve relevant sections of her laws against this kind of behaviour. No matter what has happened, the best is not to go physical to the embarrassment of the party. Both men are mature enough to know that issues can be resolved amicably.”
