The Federal Government and Ogun State have launched a $12 million agrochemical plant, Springfield Agro Crop Protection Chemical Plant in Sagamu marking a significant step towards enhancing food security and promoting local manufacturing in Nigeria. The Agro Chemical Plant, located in Sagamu, is expected to drive agricultural productivity and economic growth while reducing dependence on imported agrochemicals.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, emphasised the plant’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural value chain. According to him, food security can only be achieved by expanding industrial capacity across the value chain, and the new facility aligns with the government’s agenda to combat hunger and ensure sustainable food production.

“This project is a demonstration of what can be achieved when the private and public sectors collaborate for growth. We cannot achieve peace unless the robust committees we roll out as a government are complemented by the ambition and commitment of the private sector,” Mr. Shettima stated.

Adedapo Abiodun, Ogun State Governor, represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, praised the Kewalram Chanrai Group for its longstanding commitment to agricultural development in Nigeria. He reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to providing an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

“This event affirms Ogun’s progress in creating a conducive environment for industries to flourish. By improving inputs, mechanisation, and extension services, our government has positioned Ogun State to drive higher agricultural productivity, reduce the cost of staple foods, and achieve food security,” Mr. Abiodun noted.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the project also includes a hospital to provide quality healthcare services to the local community, enhancing the well-being of residents. The governor assured investors that the government would continue to support initiatives that drive economic growth through strategic infrastructure, policies, and incentives.

The agrochemical plant, a subsidiary of Springfield Agro Ltd under the Kewalram Chanrai Group, will produce herbicides and insecticides with an integrated bottle manufacturing unit. The factory is expected to generate between 300 and 500 direct and indirect jobs, with a significant portion of employment opportunities allocated to Ogun State indigenes.

Chairman of the Kewalram Chanrai Group, Narain Chanrai, highlighted the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s industrialisation drive. “The success of Springfield in Nigeria has given us the impetus to expand to other African countries. This plant will drastically reduce the importation of agrochemicals, conserve foreign exchange, and contribute to the backward integration programs of both the federal and state governments,” he stated.

As gathered, Springfield Agro Ltd, a key player in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, provides total farm solutions, including seeds, fertilizers, tractors, and agrochemicals. The company’s investment in local manufacturing is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported agricultural inputs, making farm inputs more affordable for Nigerian farmers. Additionally, the facility’s production capacity, starting at 30 million liters per annum and expandable to 50 million liters, positions it as a major contributor to the country’s agrochemical needs.

Beyond Nigeria, the plant will serve as an export hub, supplying agrochemicals to neighboring West African countries, further strengthening Nigeria’s role as an agricultural powerhouse in the region. The initiative is expected to boost government revenue through taxes, enhance local business development, and create additional employment opportunities.

Mr. Johnson Imuentiyan, an agrochemical products merchant, who witnessed the event said “With this investment, both the federal and Ogun state governments have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering an enabling business environment, driving economic prosperity, and ensuring food security for all Nigerians”.
