Anuoluwapo Opeyori of Nigeria emerged winner of the 2025 All Africa Senior Badminton Championship men’s singles title in Douala, Cameroon.

Opeyori beat Egypt’s Adham Hatem 2-0 (21-7, 23-21) in Sunday’s final to claim a fifth consecutive gold medal in the event.

He began his run to gold with a 2-0 win over Algeria’s M. Ouchefoun in the round of 32, and followed up with another straight-sets victory against Reunion’s T. Cougouille in the round of 16.

Also he defeated Zambia’s Kalombo Mulenga, Mauritius’ Georges Paul in the quarter-finals and Morocco’s Driss Bourroum in the semi-finals to reach Sunday’s final.

Speaking after his historic feat Opeyori said:“This victory means a lot to me. It has been a tough tournament, but I stayed focused and gave my best in every match.

“Coming in as the defending champion, I knew I had a target on my back, but I was determined to retain my title.

“Winning my seventh African gold is a huge achievement, and I’m grateful to my coaches, teammates, the Nigerian Badminton Federation, and the National Sports Commission for their support. I hope this inspires younger players to keep pushing for excellence.”

Opeyori has also won two African Games gold medals in a glittering career.

Apart from Opeyori’s men’s singles success in Douala, Nigeria also won two bronze medals: in the mixed doubles through Ukeh Deborah and Alhaji Aliyu Shehu, and men’s doubles courtesy of Ikechukwu Victor and Emmanuel Joseph.
