The 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum kicked off today at the Muhammad Indimi multipurpose hall in Maiduguri, with Governors from the region, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, Ministers, Members of the National and State Assembly traditional rulers from Nigeria and Lake Chad Region and international dignitaries in attendance.

In his welcome address, the Governor of Yobe State Mai Mala Buni emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing the region’s challenges, including security threats, climate change, and socio-economic disparities.

“We are gathered here today as one people, united by a common purpose and shared destiny,” the Governor said. “The Lake Chad Basin region faces numerous challenges that transcend national borders, and it is only through collective action that we can hope to overcome them.”

The Governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to regional cooperation and stability. He also thanked the United Nations, Lake Chad Basin Commission, UNDP, African Union Commission, and other development partners for their support.

The Forum aims to consolidate gains and promote peace, cross-border cooperation, security, and sustainable development in the Lake Chad Basin region. Delegates and participants will discuss progress, challenges, and strategies for the region’s stabilization, recovery, and resilience.

The theme of the 5th Forum is “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community.”

According to the Governor, the Forum will provide an opportunity for states and provinces around the Lake Chad Basin region to discuss and reflect on the journey so far since the regional strategy for stabilization, recovery, and resilience became operational five years ago.

The Lake Chad Basin region has faced significant challenges in recent years, including the Boko Haram insurgency, climate change, and socio-economic disparities. However, the region has also made significant progress, including the voluntary return and integration of displaced populations and the implementation of stabilization and recovery projects.

The meeting is expected to last for two days and come up with a solution to environmental and climate change effects as well as security matters to enable sustainable peace and development.
