The Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr KufreAbasi Edidem, has urged school boards, principals, and headteachers to prioritise sports in their learning curriculum.

He stated that giving sports due attention would promote long-term sports development in public schools and contribute to sustainable growth and lasting success in sports competitions both within and outside Nigeria.

Edidem, who represents Itu State Constituency, made the call in Uyo on Friday when he hosted the U-19 Women’s Cricket champions and the American Flag Football teams from Community Secondary Commercial School, Ibiaku Itam, in Itu Local Government Area.He affirmed that the House was committed to supporting sports and other extracurricular activities in state-owned primary and secondary schools through adequate funding.

In his words: “We encourage school boards, principals, and headteachers to prioritise sports in the learning curriculum. This will foster long-term sports development in public schools, ensuring sustainable growth and lasting victories in future competitions.”

The two female cricketers, Inyene Umoh and Deborah Bassey—members of Nigeria’s junior female Yellow Greens—were reported to have defeated New Zealand and Ireland at the ICC U-19 World Cup, which took place in Malaysia from 18th January to 2nd February 2025, finishing in sixth place. Meanwhile, the American Flag Football teams—both male and female—won silver trophies in the Season Three Secondary Schools Championship Finals in Calabar, Cross River State.
