Reigning African champion Anuoluwapo Opeyori has said he is ready to defend his men’s singles African Badminton Championships title and also help Nigeria win the team event as the 2025 edition of the tournament gathers momentum in Doula, Cameroon, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 27-year-old will hope to continue his dominance in the men’s singles category having won his first title in 2019 before claiming consecutive titles from 2022 to 2024.

Opeyori who has also appeared at two Olympic Games is the most experienced of Nigeria’s 10-man team in the tournament and he faces a strong field in his category.

On Monday, he beat Zambia’s Kalombo Mulenga (13-12, 21-10, 21-12) as Nigeria began their campaign with a win.

“My preparation was well executed, and I am now ready for the games ahead. I know the competition will be tough, and I am determined to defend my title,” Opeyori told Badminton Africa TV.

Aside from personal glory, Nigeria’s Paris Olympics team captain has also set his target on the team event which the country last won in 2019 as hosts of the competition.
