The President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, has expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences following the death of Pope Francis, calling the late pontiff a “global symbol of peace, unity, and unwavering faith.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, Bishop Oke extended the sympathies of the entire Pentecostal community in Nigeria to the Catholic Church worldwide, describing the Pope’s passing as not only a loss to the Catholic faithful but also to the entire Christian body and humanity at large.

“The Pope was a man of truth, love, and dialogue among faiths. He was a bridge builder who laboured tirelessly for a better, more compassionate world,” Oke remarked, emphasising the late pontiff’s role as a leader who transcended denominational lines.

He added, “In him, we saw a shepherd who embraced the world with fatherly warmth. His leadership touched the heart of all Christians, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of believers.”

Bishop Oke also highlighted the Pope’s efforts to foster interfaith dialogue and global peace, particularly noting his outreach to Pentecostal leaders. These initiatives helped ease longstanding theological tensions between Catholic and Pentecostal movements, promoting unity and understanding.

Further acknowledging the Pope’s humility, Bishop Oke shared how the late pontiff chose to live simply and shunned the excesses often associated with high religious office. “His lifestyle was a profound message in itself, and many of us across the divide took inspiration from his example,” he added.

To honor the memory of Pope Francis, Bishop Oke announced that the PFN would observe a day of prayer across its churches. “Our hearts are with our Catholic brothers and sisters at this time. We mourn with you and stand with you in faith,” he stated, adding that the PFN would pray for the Catholic Church as it navigates this moment of transition.

While acknowledging the doctrinal differences between Catholicism and Pentecostalism, Bishop Oke urged for unity in moments of grief and reflection. “Now more than ever, we must remember that we are one in Christ. The world needs to see the Church united in love and mutual respect,” he said.

Bishop Oke concluded by encouraging the Catholic faithful to take solace in the enduring impact of the Pope’s spiritual leadership.

“He ran his race with grace and finished strong. His legacy will continue to speak in churches, in homes, and in hearts across the world,” he said.

The PFN President also called on other Christian leaders, especially in Nigeria, to issue similar messages of solidarity to strengthen the bonds among various denominations.
