The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria has urged leaders both at the federal and state levels to adopt proper budget implementation measures and ensure technology compliance in the budgeting circle to tackle the various economic challenges facing the country.

Speaking on Tuesday during the ANAN Second Session of the 2025 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme and Induction of new members in Yenagoa, ANAN President and Chairman of Council, Dr. James Ekerare Neminebor said Nigeria was experiencing inflation and other economic challenges because leaders and administrators divert budgeted funds to other sectors which may not be relevant.

Neminebor who spoke on the theme of the workshop: ‘Corporate Value Creation and Reporting’ stressed the need for the engagement of properly trained accountants by public office holders to help advise leaders on some right economic approaches for the nation.

He also called on accountants to remain committed to excellence and value to improve the trajectory of their respective organizations and continually uphold the ethics of the profession.

He said, “Governance is ruled by budget, and every year, we put down on paper that these are the things we will spend on and they are backed up with money; these are the things we feel will satisfy the entire sector of the economy.

“Implement that budgetary allocation: don’t divert budget A to budget C; that’s what brings problems in our economy.

“Train the accountants to direct the administrators – if accountants are professionally trained to direct the administrators to implement proper budgeting – Nigeria will be topmost in financial stability and the economy will start to grow significantly.

As professional accountants, we play critical roles in creating corporate value and providing accurate and timely financial information to stakeholders. Our responsibilities are strategic, proactive and far-reaching as we are pivotal to organizational planning, decision making, risk management and performance measurement in tracking progress.”

Also speaking, ANAN Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kayode Olusola Fasua, urged accountants to utilize the knowledge and insights gained from the workshop to strive for excellence in their profession.

Fasua said training underscored the importance of staying abreast of the evolving trends and standards of the accounting profession.

He said, “Corporate value creation is at the heart of every successful business strategy, focusing on both financial and non-financial factors that contribute to long-term sustainability and stakeholders’ wealth.”

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, who declared the workshop open urged accountants to always strive to remain professional in the discharge of their duties, saying they were pivotal to the economic growth of any nation.
