Groups differ on Jigawa, Kano’s N5bn budget for Ramadan

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership has condemned the sum of N5bn budget allocated by Jigawa and Kano states for Ramadan feeding programmes.
According to CACOL, the budget should prioritise the real needs of the people.
Rather than allocating such a huge sum for Ramadan feeding, CACOL said the government should focus on critical sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure.
Recently, the Jigawa State Government approved the sum of N4,836,546,000.00 for this 2025 Ramadan Feeding Programme.
Also, the Kano State Government earmarked N1,000,000,000 for Ramadan feeding.
Speaking to Saturday PUNCH, the Executive Director of CACOL, Debo Adeniran, condemned the funds allocated for the Ramadan feeding, describing it as an unnecessary expenditure in the budget.
Debo noted that the Ramadan budget often failed to reach those who needed it.
He added that it wasn’t the state’s business to worship God on behalf of the people.
“It is the welfare and security of the people that should be their priority. There is a need for policies that will outlaw such spending,” Debo said.
He stated that many states had followed suit in this misplacement of priorities.
Meanwhile, the Lead Missioner of the Nasrul-Lahi-L-Fatih Society, Adepoju-Alaseyori Ridwanullahi, said there was nothing wrong in the budget allocations for Ramadan feeding.
He added that Ramadan was a time government should focus more on catering for the needs of its people.
Ridwanullahi said, “This is a period the government should take care of its people and it is a moral teaching of Ramadan.”
Also, member of Imām-in-Council, Lagos State University, Dr Uthman Okanlawon, said the governments’ efforts to alleviate the challenges ahead of fasting were commendable and not harmful.
Okanlawon noted that there was nothing wrong with it if the funds were used for their intended purpose.
“This money will benefit everyone in these states, where the majority of the population are Muslims. It should not be viewed as questioning whether this is what the state needs. A hungry man is an angry man. These people have been fasting even before Ramadan,” he stated.
